“Wait Watchers”

The Bible encourages us all to WAIT on the LORD. In the book of Lamentations, chapter 3, verses 25-26, reminds us that “The Lord is good to those who wait for Him. To the soul who seeks hope and wait quietly.” Most of life itself is about waiting. It’s one of those moments where God is testing our patience and our Faith in HIM. Maybe you’re reading this blog today waiting for unanswered prayers, tests results or how to make ends meet while the SNAP programs are being held hostage by this administration.

For some of us, the idea of waiting for something seems so far away. I hope my words of encouragement today will inspire you to wait just a little while longer. God works through our waiting in order to grow us up in one of those Fruit of the Spirit…Patience. In the book of Galatians, 6:9 says, “Let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season, we shall reap , if we faint not.” Waiting has a way of correcting one’s motives and forces our motives into a state of humility and that’s when we realize that God is always in Control!

I want to leave you with these three things…

  1. Wait for the LORD despite delays. Keep praying to God. God delays are not alway denials because there are times God will say no but we must Wait to get some clarity from the LORD.
  2. Know that in spite of what’s happening with this Government, Isaiah 9:6 reminds us that the THE GOVERNMENT IS ON JESUS’ SHOULDERS! God’s timing is always perfect and He will always come at the right time in your life
  3. Psalm 27:14, encourages us all to Wait for the Lord despite any difficulties you might be going through today. “Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; WAIT, I say, on the LORD!”

As “WE THE PEOPLE” are about to Wait Out the next couple of years of this administration, know that God has not forgotten about you. HE is still on the throne. The repercussions we are experiencing today from Project 2025 is targeting the same people JESUS stood up for. The marginalized, disenfranchised, the exploited, disabled and the poor. Jesus said, in Matthew 25:40, “Truly I tell you whatever you do to the least of these, you did it to me.”

May the strength of God sustain you. May the Power of God preserve you. May the hands of God protect you. May the LOVE of GOD go with you this day and forevermore. In Jesus Name. AMEN.

STEPPING INTO THE UNPLANNED

Jeremiah 29:11 offers consolation to Christians going through challenging times these days. The text’s contents were addressed to those who were going through difficult times and suffering; these individuals probably wanted an instant rescue, similar to the one Hananiah claimed to have provided. However, God’s answer is not to give a quick way out of the sticky circumstance. Instead, God assures them that despite their current circumstances, He has a plan to prosper them.

In this modern world, most of our lives revolve around our careers. As we commence a new year, we are reminded in Colossians 3:23–24 to approach all we do with all of your heart, treating it as though it were for the benefit of the Lord rather than human masters, knowing that the Lord will reward us with an inheritance. You are serving the Lord Christ, after all.

Praying for God’s will in your specific career sector is the first search engine you go to seek guidance through prayer. God’s design and purpose for each of our lives are known to us. This does not imply that we should plan but do nothing for ourselves. Jesus granted us “Free Will” because of this, even though we are aware that He is aware of our future actions.

In the event that you are having difficulties, never forget to pursue a relationship with Jesus on a regular basis, particularly during times of doubt. It’s easy to feel alone and like no one understands when you’re going through the hardest times in life. That’s why it’s critical to tell others about all that Jesus has accomplished in addition to expressing gratitude for His goodness. Encourage someone else when things look the worst possible. God’s promises in Romans 8:28—”All things work together for good for those who love Him”—give us hope during those unsure times.

I am convinced that God will provide for all of our needs in accordance with His glory and riches. God promises that people who seek Him will never be abandoned. He will meet our material, spiritual, and economical needs. This also relates to God’s intention to honour our diligence.

The Apostle Paul tells us how to know that God is reliable when we put our faith in Him to supply what we lack since He frequently gave Paul the strength to persevere. We declare, “My God shall supply all my needs,” because God gives us the grace and fortitude to face each new obstacle on a daily basis.

As a gracious and generous Father, God was prepared to sacrifice His own Son in order to save us. How can we not put our trust in Him to provide for all of our needs?

What STAR are you following?

Celebrity “stars” have a lot of followers on the internet today. They can either influence a crowd in a path of destruction that can lead its followers down a path they might not want to go. Or, they can have a positive affect on those who are following them. As we approach the New Year, let us not forget what the power of the tongue did on January 6th 2021, as we witnessed the attack on the United States Capital. The people were following the wrong star! “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of wicked conceals violence (Prov. 10:11).”

The gospel of John also instructs us to live like Jesus and seek to imitate Him. For it is better to go to the Lord for safety than to trust in mere men (Ps. 118:8).” There are places in our lives where living out our faith takes boldness and trust in God. Too often, there are people in high places who are fearful of professing their faith in Jesus and standing up for what they know is the right thing to do. They are following the star of fear. “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Tim. 1:7)”

In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter two, we learn that Herod privately called for the wise men with the intentions of learning from them the exact timing that the star had appeared. Herod sent them to Bethlehem to search diligently for the child (Jesus) and when he is found, they were to bring him to Herod. They didn’t know where the star would lead them, they just followed it until it brought them to Bethlehem and to Jesus. Scripture says, when they saw that the star had stopped, they were filled with joy. Having been warned in a dream, instead of returning to the “star” Herod, scripture tells us they went back to their own country another way.

There are many Herod’s in our world today and we will all be challenged to choose between following the “star of obedience to God” or the star of disobedience to a “star like figures of King Herod” that seeks to cause division and injustices in this world?

This story about The Magi and wise men of the East takes us on their journey in following the only true “STAR” that will lead them to the only Divine One. Matthew, chapter 2, is about people being called to follow the true star in order to find their purpose in this life. Do you have the courage to follow what is right and necessary especially during these times of moral crisis?

I thank God for those who didn’t follow the “star” of racism, slavery and white supremacy. During the Civil Rights Movement, I thank God for those who followed the “STAR” of civil disobedience to unjust laws and systemic racism in a world that needs of a Savior. John 10:10 reminds us that “Jesus came that we may have life, and have it abundantly”.

Jesus is the “STAR” of this life that will direct you to the truth and will show you the path that will lead you to a life with God! This is my invitation to you today, an invitation to find joy and peace in your lives and to look forward in the future with hope for a brighter tomorrow. Jesus already has a path set up for you, it was set before you were born. Do you choose to follow the “star” that will lead you away from God or lead you towards the light of this world?

What STAR are you being called to follow in 2022?

A Pharisee In The Seams Of Social Justice

The book of Acts is essential because in it, those who read it, can see the scope and nature of the earliest Christian mission. One of the main heroes of Acts is the apostle, Paul. We are first introduced to him as a persecutor of the early Christian movement. Through Paul’s missionary journeys, which began around the 16th century, God used him to legitimize the Christianization and colonization of faraway lands by the European empires.

One of the primary themes in the prophetic literatures is Justice. The apostle Paul intertwines Hebrew terms throughout scriptures which are used in certain context that God/Yahweh expected his people to live by. The word Justice is coherent with righteousness and is one essential term that is used frequently. Moreover, Social Justice can be depicted as a paradigm that Yahweh challenges his people to respond to. This concept of Social Justice was essential for the theology of the prophetic prophets. For one thing, God has used the prophets to shine light in their community to address the levels of neglect and abuse of their people. Throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament scriptures, we find illustrations how a ruler or nation should advocate for justice through actions by caring for the poor, needy and the oppressed in which God’s standards are measured and how He we will be judged. “Thus says the LORD, maintain justice, and do what is right (Isaiah 56:1).”

The apostle Paul can be characterized as one of the great world changers in the life of Christians. Having a Jewish blood in his DNA, and being raised in the Roman world, God created him to be the perfect fit to minister to not only the Jews but also to the Gentiles. The ethnicity and background of Saul of Tarsus is historically known as a theologian who although was rejected in the synagogue, never truly abandoned Judaism.  Paul calls himself a Pharisee and we know that Scholars agree about Paul’s Jewish background and identity, but some dispute his Roman citizenship. None of the Pauline letters mention that Paul is a Roman citizen, but the book of Acts claims twice that he is (Acts 16:37-38, Acts 22: 25-28).

The apostle Paul came to faith of Jesus as the Messiah after his encounter with God who gave him a vision as he traveled on the road to Damascus. Scholars believe that one of Paul’s motivations for persecuting Christians was inflamed by the politics of the Sadducees and the Romans and not as some might believe by the religious piety of the Pharisees.

Paul’s beliefs in the Hebrew Bible are accredited from his upbringing and rabbinic teachings. He received some of the best education of his time and was received by the people and especially the philosophers. No other apostle is known to have been rejected by the synagogue and misunderstood by the church. Paul’s theology was rooted in the Torah and was known as the true Judaism. If we are honest, there are times that we criticize about rules. The apostle Paul, knew about rules because he was a former Pharisee.

God gave us his rules in the Holy Scriptures so that we can handle difficult choices. Just like Paul who confronted the acts of legalism by listening to God/Yahweh, we too are charged to address the “isms” of this world.

Repletely, Luke makes it transparent to the reader of Acts showing Jesus’ mission being fulfilled as the Word of God spreads.  Noticing, that everywhere the Word went there was some kind of opposition. In the same way, everywhere the Word went, some believed! The early Christian movement is depicted as a movement within Judaism. One of the major concern and centrality of Jerusalem for the author of Luke-Acts was the restoration of Israel. Paul, is in a sense Torah observant in the book of Acts and it’s here where we find important points. First, the missionaries in Acts were Jewish. Gentile converts in Acts were bound by the food laws of the Torah. Some scholars believe that Paul’s reference to being a Pharisee, found in the present tense and also in the past tense, constitutes his doctrinal point of convergence in terms of the resurrection of the dead, rather than his current identity in Christ.

Also, the gospel of Luke and Acts presents a number of positives and negatives putting much emphasis for caring for the marginalized and the poor by meeting not just their spiritual needs but most importantly their physical needs. The Pharisees were known for their economic statuses and as Christians, followers of Christ, we too should allow God to use us and finds us doing justice and not just speaking about it and backing it with some kind of action.

Many scholars still argue today about the choice of choosing the apostle Paul, of all people, as a means by which to consider issues of Jewishness in an ongoing debate even with other Jews. Although, Paul was a devoted Pharisee, who was reared in the upbringing of Jewish Law, he was obedience to any commands even if it meant murdering Christians.

An important significance of the rite in the Bible is regarding circumcision. For instance, in ancient Israel and in Judaism, the circumcision was customarily performed upon infants of eight days according to Genesis, chapter 17, verse 12 saying, “And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any strange, which is not of thy seed .” In the Hebrews letters, it is also depicted in a different facet to the practice to a divine injunction to Abraham, Joshua and to the people of Israel. The interpretation of this concept of circumcision can also be depicted and interpreted from a “spiritual” point of view of individuals having an uncircumcised heart which is the same of being unreceptive to the Word of God.

Although there were chief rulers in Jerusalem who were tormenting over the issue of circumcision, we find that this requirement was omitted from the Gentiles believers. For the Gentiles, it was more important of how their lifestyle were and to see life changing behaviors such as alienation from their once idols and changes in the sexual behaviors.

The message of Social Justice is threaded throughout both in the Old and New Testament. The Old Testament Laws created numerous laws to make sure that the inflicted were treated fairly and provisions were made to bring some kind of relief. The concept of Social Justice is not just about the poor but it raises awareness for those who can make a difference especially those who are in official compacities to make changes that will treat people with humanity.  Social Justice is an action word. God wants his followers to live a holy life and treat others with compassion while pursuing justice. Partiality has no place when we are “doing justice”, taking advantage of the powerless and the undeserved has no place when we are doing justice.

The apostle Paul was called to preach to the Gentiles and he believed he could be all things to all people. “For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law (1st Corinthians 9:19-20).” Some have used Paul’s quote in scripture to mean that we as Christians are to compromise with the world in order to fit in. On the contrary, when we look at Paul’s life, he refused to compromise God’s moral standards and was willing to forgo traditions and what he was familiar with in order to share the Gospel to both Jewish and non-Jewish individuals.

The term Social Justice is not always defined the same way nor is it exercised the same way. In reality, we cannot always respond to everyone who asks for money. Nor, can we donate to every organization that is helping the poor. However, in our own moral proximity that we find ourselves, we can all love our neighbors as ourselves.

In closing, there are physical needs all around us that should motivate us to show the Love of Jesus, when we can, where we can and however, we can. One of the lessons we learn from the apostle Paul’s examples for Christians today is how God gave him everything he needed to accomplish His purposes. He had the assurance from God and learned the value of obedience.

As we walk with the apostle Paul through scriptures, who like many disciples today are going through challenges, struggles and sharing testimonial victories, there is a wealth of wisdom we can gleam from his life as we strive to grow and live a purposeful life.

God is our REST…in the midst of unrest

Many hearts have been exhausted during this time of unrest and uncertainties. Whether its due to Covid, the Elections, Deaths or Loss of Employment, know that God can give you REST! Jesus sends an invitation to all of those who desires HIS rest, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matt. 11:28-29).

There are a number of passages in the bible where we find Jesus stopping to rest. When we think of rest, we often relate it to bodily fatigue. This rest I’m sharing with you today is for the soul and its deeply rooted and grounded in trusting in the Lord! “For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. (Heb. 4:10)

If you’re feeling burdened down today, especially during these times of unrest and uncertainties, I want to encourage you to give your yoke to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  God is standing and waiting to give you true rest that goes deep into your souls and only he can give. “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Jer. 6:16)

God can refuel your soul today. God is waiting for you to quiet your hearts and spend time with HIM. There is truth in His Word! There is Peace in His Word! There is healing in His Word! There is Comfort in His Word! “My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. (Psalm 62:1-2)

Is your soul at rest today? Are your emotions at rest? God is waiting for your RSVP today. He promises in his Word that He will give you REST for your SOUL!

Godly Legacies That Last…

The Epistles to the Hebrews, gives Christians some instructions that can be applied even today in chapter 12, verse one. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw out everything that hinders…”

The most influential legacy that God’s son left us on this side of the earth was HIS son JESUS! He and He alone lived a life that is worthy of honor and praise. I don’t know about you, but I purposely strive to leave legacies that are always changing lives.

During this time of COVID, if you’re remotely leading from your church building, it is essential that we begin to think and step outside of the box from how we “used” to lead. We are no longer confined to the thirty Deacons we might have “Chaired”. The church has left the building and our leadership responsibilities have expanded. The way we led before Covid-19 must now be led through different lenses in the life of the church.  Nothing will change if “YOU” don’t make a change.

During this time of uncertainty, every leader of the church is being challenged in making their own Legacy journey during Covid-19.  I’m a witness that even in the mist of difficulties, we can still leave a legacy of Joy! James 1:2-3 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Even in the mist of Covid-19, God is still speaking to us. I want to leave a legacy of Hearing and Doing what God says in His WORD. “But be ye doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves (James 1:22).”

My hope is that I leave the kind of leadership legacy that people will remember me for my PRESENCE, my ACTIONS, my WORDs, my ATTITUDE, my FAITH, and my LOVE.

What imprints are you making in the life of those you are around?

Let God Turn Your Shames Into Triumphs

Many of us have been shamed once in our lifetime. My heart goes out to those who were born under the cloud of shame, or into a dysfunctional family, that they had no control of and it seems to hover over you day after day. I want to encourage you today that God can turn your shames into triumphs. When people try to shame you or reject you because of the poor choices of your family, know that God is ready to receive what man rejects. This story of Jephthah is a redemption story. But I want you to know that none of us are beyond God’s power and His grace to restore our lives.

The clouds of shame in Jephthah’s life is found in the book of Judges in the eleventh chapter. The writer of this text wastes no time in labeling Jephthah as the son of a Harlot.  “Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior. His father was Gilead; his mother was a prostitute (Judges 11:1).” Could you imagine someone introducing you first as the son of a prostitute? We know that Jephthah’s biological father was Gilead. Jephthah was despised and rejected by his brothers of another mother. Unfortunately, as Gilead’s sons got older, the brothers kept shaming Jephthah because of greed and not wanting to share any inheritance of their father. I ponder why Gilead, didn’t introduce this woman by her birth name?

Depending on which lens you are reading from, it is easy to focus on the prostitute who had an illegitimate child in this text. On the other hand, from from a social justice perspective, one can also look through the lens of rape, human trafficking or infidelity. There will be people that’ll come into your lives that will never let you forget your unjust circumstances that you had no control of. When people fail to look beyond their ill-conceived prejudices and stereotypes, I want to encourage you to take hold of your own story and not allow others to write it for you!

God has a divine blessing waiting for you despite of what your relatives did. When people hate on you, that’s not your issue, its theirs! Keep doing what God wants you to do. God specializes in taking those who seem to be the least of these and making them vessels of honor for His glory!
